A camera system is only useful if it captures what you need when something goes wrong. For businesses in Greenville and across the Upstate, that usually comes down to five things: coverage, image quality, recording, remote access and support. Here is what to look for in each.
1. Coverage planned around how your property is used
The most common problem we see is not a bad camera. It is a camera in the wrong place. Before choosing equipment, map the areas that matter: entrances and exits, parking lots, loading docks, registers, stockrooms and any spot where an incident would be costly. A good design covers those areas with as few cameras as possible, with overlapping views at the points people must pass through.
2. Image quality that holds up in real conditions
Resolution matters, but so do lighting and lens choice. A 4K camera pointed into the sun or across a dark parking lot can still produce unusable footage. Look for cameras with strong low-light and infrared performance for exterior areas, and choose lenses that match the distance you need to cover. During a site survey, we check lighting at each location for this reason.
3. Recording you own and can rely on
Many cloud camera systems charge a monthly fee per camera to store video. Systems like UniFi Protect record to a network video recorder at your location, so you own the footage and avoid required per-camera subscriptions. Whichever approach you choose, make sure storage is sized for the number of cameras and the number of days of video you need to keep.
4. Remote access that your team will actually use
Owners and managers should be able to check live video, review recordings and export clips from a phone without calling an IT person. A clean, simple app matters more than a long feature list. Ask to see the app before you buy.
5. A local installer who supports it
Cameras need occasional attention: a moved camera, a failed drive, a new door that needs coverage. Choose an installer who will be there after the job is done, and who can connect your cameras to your access control and alarm system so an alert comes with video.
